Roshni Khatri (or Roshani Khatri or Rukshana KC, रोशनी खत्री in Nepali) is a Nepali model, beauty queen, and a contestant of the Miss Nepal beauty pageant competition 2016. In the Miss Nepal 2016 contest, held in the Hotel Annapurna on 8 April 2016, Roshni was declared First Runner Up.

As the first runner up of the competition, Roshni got the title of Miss Nepal Earth 2016, enabling her to participate in Miss Earth 2016 contest. In the Miss Nepal 2016 contest, she also won two subtitle of Miss Confidant and Miss Personality.

Roshni participated in the Miss Nepal competition 2016 as contestant number 7. Before participating in the Miss Nepal Competition, Roshni hadn’t participated in any other beauty pageants or modelling competitions before.

In the Miss Nepal contestant feature of the Nepali tabloid Kantipur Saptahik, Roshni said that her aim in life is to be a successful IT officer. She also said that she enjoys singing and when it comes to wearing, she prefers casual wears.

Roshni was born in 1996 in Talcchikhel Lalitpur and spent her childhood there. After completing the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) Exams from the Birendra Sainik Mahavidhyalaya, a military boarding school in Kavre, Nepal, Roshni went on to pursue a higher secondary education in Computer Science.

At the time of her participation in the Miss Nepal Competition, Roshni was working at the Lalitpur Madhyamik Vidhvalaya (LMV), a popular private boarding school in Lalitpur.

Barsha or Barsa Lekhi ( वर्षा लेखी in Nepali) is a Nepali model, beauty queen, and a contestant of the Miss Nepal beauty pageant competition 2016. In the Miss Nepal 2016 contest, held in the Hotel Annapurna on 8 April 2016, Barsha was declared second runner up.

Barsha was born in 1994 in Phattepur Mahottari. After her School Leaving Certificate (SLC) Exams Barsha went to to pursue a higher secondary education in Science and completed a Bachelor of Science (Bsc) specialising in environmental science.

Barsha says that her aim in life is to be a politician and work for the oppressed ethnic minorities of Nepal.

When asked about her participation in the Miss Nepal competition, she said that she participated in the competition because she wanted to use the platform of Miss Nepal to raise voice against the exploitative Kamlari and Kamaiya system in Nepal. If won the competition, she said, she would be able to push the issues of the Tharu community to make a mainstream issue in Nepal.

Before participating in the Miss Nepal Competition, Barsha didn’t take part in any other beauty pageant or modelling competitions.

Ular ( उलार in Nepali) is a popular Nepali novel written by Nepali novelist and short-story writer Nayan Raj Pandey. Ular was first published in 1996 in Tanneri bimonthly magazine and since then the novel has been subsequently published by different publishers. Ular’s latest publication was done by Fineprint in 2015.

Ular is Pandey’s fourth novel and after its publication, the novel received mostly positive critical reviews. Ular is included as a curricular read for Tribhuvan University’s Bachelor-level students majoring in Nepali. Ular’s success has encouraged the author Nayan Raj Pandey to dedicate himself full-time in writing after a two-decade long career in audio-visual production and  screenplay writing.

Ular Nepali Novel: The Plot

Set in Nepalgunj, a town in Western Nepal, Ular is the story of a cart-driving labourer who finds himself in trouble and misery of his horse dies. In the local language of Terai, Ular literally denotes a misbalance in a cart caused by load concentration at the back.

Ular raises the issue of Nepal’s corrupt political culture through Premlalawa, a middle class laborer whose cart was used by a political leader. Premlalawa decides to travel to the capital city Kathmandu to demand compensation for the damage. In doing so, Premlalawa encounters several problems that portray Nepal’s age-old problems of poverty, unemployment and widespread corruption.

Early Life & Education

Nayan Raj Pandey was born in Kathmandu’s Pyukha Tole on 9 June 1966. At the time of his birth his father Dilli Raj Pandey was working in the Department of Information as a civil servant and his mother Bhagbati Devi Pandey was a housewife. Soon after, his father was appointed Headmaster in a school in Nepaljung, Banke and since the family moved to Nepalgunj, Nayan Raj spent most of his childhood in Nepalgunj. He completed the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examination and a higher secondary degree from Nepalgunj.

In 1987, Nayan Raj moved to Kathmandu to pursue a Bachelor of Law degree and started his literary career from Kathmandu. Because he spent most of his childhood and youth years in the Terai, though now based in Kathmandu, his literary works mostly focus on social, cultural, political and economic issues of that region.

Initially Pandey’s literary creation was mainly focused on writing novels and short stories, however, slowly he started writing screenplays for television series and video documentaries. He also started producing and directing TV-series and documentaries mainly for Nepal Television. Pandey produced and presented a literary and cultural TV program called Avibekti (expression) which was aired by Nepal Television for many years. He has written scripts for more than 2 dozen Nepali movies.

Apart from novels, short story collections and newspaper articles, Pandey has written scripts for more than 2 dozen Nepali movies. 

After being engaged in audio-visual production for almost two decades, Pandey decided to dedicate himself to writingfull-time.

In 1987, Pandey published 2 novels Nango Manchheko Diary (The Diary of a Naked Man) and Bikramaditya Euta Suun Katha. Then after 10 years in 1997 he published another novel Atirikta. In 2000 his fourth novel Ular was published which received many positive reviews. Pandey’s Ular is included as a curricular read for Tribhuvan University’s Bachelor-level students majoring in Nepal.

In 2011 he published another popular novel Luu and in 2013 yet another novel Ghamkiri.

Nayan Raj Pandey has received various awards for his various literary works and for his contribution to Nepali literature and movie industry. Some of the awards that he received include:

Ashmi Shrestha or Asmi/Asmee Shrestha, अश्मी श्रेष्ठ in Nepali- is the winner of the  Miss Nepal Beauty Contest 2016. Prior to participating in the Miss Nepal competition, Ashmi was a popular model and a TV presenter and was the winner of Face of Classic Diamond Jewelers in 2014.

In the past, Ashmi has worked as a TV presenter in Channel Nepal and her modeling career spans more than half a decade. In March 2016, Ashmi obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from Ace Institute of Management, Kathmandu. Ashmi participated in the Miss Nepal competition 2016 as contestant number 11. Apart from the Miss Nepal title, she also grabbed three subtitles: Miss Personality, Miss Photogenic and Best in Evening Gown.

Kusum Thapa Magar (कुसुम थापा मगर in Nepali) is a Nepali model, beauty queen and a contestant of Miss Nepal beauty pageant competition 2016. Prior to participating in the Miss Nepal competition, Kusum was crowned Miss Butwal 2016 and Miss Teen College 2015.

Nabina Lama (1983-) is a Nepali student political activist and the Chairperson of the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), a student wing of the leftist CPN (UML) party.

Nabina was elected as the Chairperson of ANNFSU in its 22nd national general convention in Kathmandu and she is the second female to hold the post after Ramkumari Jhakri. Nabina’s first term as ANNFSU’s chairperson lasts for 2 years (2016-2018).

Early Life & Education

Nabina Lama was born in 1983 in the Madankudari village of the Kavre district. Since Nabina’s father was a teacher and a leftist political cadre, she had an early exposure to politics. Many leftist political campaigners, such as Nirmal Lama, visited her home and organized political activities when she was a young kid.

Nabina attended Madankudari’s Mahendra Secondary School and she was only 12 when she became a member of the ANNFSU school level committee. She has often said in media interviews that her father’s political involvement encouraged and supported her early political ambitions.

Nabina completed her School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exams from Madankudari’s Mahendra Secondary School and moved to Kathmandu with an ambition to pursue higher education in the field of forestry. Since she couldn’t pass the entrance exam for forestry, she joined Kathmandu’s Baneshwor Campus to study liberal arts.

Later Nabina continued her studies in Padma Kanya Campus, a popular girls-only college in Kathmandu, and graduated with of Bachelor’s of Arts degree, majoring in Sociology and Political Science.

 

Political Career

On 21 February 2016 Nabina Lama was elected the Chairperson of the All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU). She defeated her rival Deepak Gautam by 216 votes. Lama secured 865 votes, while Gautam received 649 votes. Nabina Lama is the second female ever to hold the post of ANNFSU Chairperson after Ramkumari Jhakri.

Before Nabina Lama was elected for the top position of ANNFSU, she had a long and consistent history of political activism and active involvement in various student movements in Nepal.

While still a young student in Kavre, Nabina was chosen a Vice-Chairperson of the ANNFSU Kavre district level committee. In Kathmandu’s Baneshwor Campus she was elected as Secretary of the Free Student Union, an official campus representative body of students. In 2005, she was elected Free Student Union’s President from the same campus.

While she was chosen a member of the ANNFSU National Council in its 14th, 15th and 16th national general conventions, during the 17th general convention she was elected a central committee member. She oversaw women’s department during her first tenure as an ANNFSU central committee member.

She was once again elected as ANNFSU’s Secretariat Member during the organization’s 19th general convention. This time she took command of ANNFSU’s communications and public relations department.

Nabina’s political career further progressed when she was elected ANNFSU’s Vice-Chairperson in the organization’s 20th general convention held in Janakpur.

During ANNFSU’s 21th general convention held in Kathmandu, Nabina stepped one step down and filed her candidacy for the post of General Secretary. She defeated Rachana Khadka and was chosen for the post.

As a student political activist, Nabina has been at the forefront of many student movements in Nepal. She participated in protests of nationalism and border security and also fought to ensure Nepali students a 50% discount in public transportation. She also actively took part in Nepal’s Second People’s Movement, which overthrew the monarchy and made Nepal a federal democratic republic.

In a media interview, when asked what her political aspirations were for the future, she replied that she wants to lead CPN UML as its Chairperson in the future and one day dreams to lead Nepal as Prime Minister.

Personal Life

In a media interview, Nabina disclosed that she was in a relationship, but didn’t want to talk in detail about her relationship. She said that the right time to get married would be after leading ANNFSU for a year.

Though Nabina is leading an organization affiliated to CPN UML, Nabina’s father is active in more radical leftist group led by Mohan Baiddha & Netra Bikram Chand, CPN-Maoist.
